Join AIGA Salt Lake City and the ReVinylize project at the Sustainability and Climate Fair at the University of Utah October 6 at the University of Utah Free Speech Zone behind the Union Building from 10am – 2pm. The fair supports the Transatlantic Climate Bridge http://www.germany.info/climatebridge, a joint commitment to invest in newer, cleaner sources of energy.

The Revinylize Project combines social awareness with the power of creativity. By reclaiming local billboard material, the once giant images, are transformed into smaller works of art in the form of unique vinyl bags and accessories.The project empowers the public to use design thinking to stimulate thought, dialog and action by holding workshops, community events and local projects.

AIGA Salt Lake Prez, Kevin Perry, was interviewed by the local Channel 2 during the Arts Fest to talk about the ReVinylize Project. Luckily we didn’t spend the whole segment talking about the porta-potties like the year before, but ole KP did have to get cut-off a time or two. What can we say? We LOVE talking about Vinyl!

2010 Utah Arts Festival

We love the Festival. Especially when AIGA is involved!

This year was another success at the Utah Arts Festival ReVinylize booth. More than 80,000 patrons take part in this 4 day festival that showcases fine art, performing art, culinary art and much more. The festival continually is ranked among the nation’s top 100 festivals, and we are happy to be included!

We’re also not too humble to say that the ReVinylize booth was THE most popular of the festival. We held over 200 workshops with people of all ages constructing their own unique, shiny, vinyl bags. In addition to the workshops, we had more vinyl products than ever before (including the never before seen Laundry bags and purses made by local refuge es).

Thanks to all of you that participated and a special thanks to all our vinyl volunteers. You guys are amazing and we look forward to next year!

AIGA Engage Leadership Conference

Our very own Jim Killian and Kevin Perry were asked to present on the success of the ReVinylize project at the 2010 national AIGA Leadership Retreat in Chattanooga, TN. From the sounds of the crowd, we think they did pretty well. Watch closely for a Michelle Obama sighting as well as Jim and Kevin in their pre-pubescent years.

Global Artisan Partnership

To further AIGA’s outreach to the local community, a partnership has been made with the Global Artisan Refugee Pathways to Self Sufficiency program. This program empowers refugees to become self-sufficient through part-time entrepreneurial activities, including creating ReVinylize hand-made bags. This line of ReVinylize bags is hand-crafted by refugee artisans in Utah. Proceeds from these sales go back to the artisan and support AIGA’s education activities.

University of Utah Design Program

Senior students in the design program in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Utah were given large remnants of billboard material as the raw material for the creation of anything they could imagine that would breathe new life into this material that would sit in landfills for years.

The results of this creative re-use project were vast and imaginative. Solutions ranged from raincoats, purses and aprons to wallets, accessories and skateboard decks.

2009 AIGA Make/Think Conference

Our fearless leaders Kevin and Thy were asked to present ReVinylize in 1 minute to 1,500 people at the 2009 AIGA Make/Think Conference in Memphis, TN. Yup, 1 minute. And 1,500 people. This was part of the 20/20 segment where 20 AIGA leaders across the country talk about Making and Thinking in 20 minutes to the conference audience of over 1,500 people.

Thanks to Vita Brevis Films, it went off without a hitch. Plus we were left with a pretty sweet stop animation about ReVinylize.

The Volunteer Experience

I volunteered at the AIGA booth tonight at the Utah Arts Festival. At the booth one could either buy a pre-made vinyl bag from recycled billboards around Utah OR make one themselves from a different no-sew pattern. I made one at the training meeting and they are pretty cool (when I was walking past the REI the other day I heard a 12 year old boy tell his friend it was the coolest bag he had ever seen. Yeah. The bags have those kind of credentials). So I recommend making one to any of you who might be on the fence about going to the festival.

After the huge rainstorm, I left the safety of the booth and wandered the festival. There was only one booth I cared about and I am IN LOVE. I almost never want to buy other artist’s stuff. I’ve been working on trying to care about Art for Art’s sake. I usually like things to be useful or personally meaningful. And maybe I’m just a sucker for this kind of stuff because there is typograpy on it but take a look at this:
